Unreal – Set Dressing with Found Assets

This task saw us take pre-existing assets from sites such as Quixel and Sketchfab and populate a scene with them.

ATTEMPT

My first attempt at set dressing was cut short by technical errors. I wanted to create a somewhat Cyberpunk inspired scene, making use of emissive materials inside of Unreal to create the neon effect that is often seen throughout the Cyberpunk genre whilst populating the scene with a number of Sci-fi inspired assets that I had gathered.

To light the small segment of Street that I had created, I used a three-point lighting system in coordination with the neon emissive material to cast a pink hue over the scene. I used the spotlight form of lighting in Unreal as I feel as though it worked the best in comparison to the other types of lighting.

Unfortunately, the screenshot below is all that remains of my first attempt at set dressing, as I experienced a massive error. The location where all of my Unreal projects were being saved was my memory stick, which had somehow set all of the files to “Read Only”. I couldn’t remove the read-only state from the drive, which essentially stopped me from doing any more work on this small project as I could no longer save to my memory stick.

OUTCOME

Given that the above screenshot is the result of roughly 30 minutes of work, I’m happy with what I created. If I hadn’t had the error, I would have loved to continue this further, exploring the idea of creating a back alley within a futuristic city that has potentially been used for shady dealings.
